Overview

The FT-BIDI-1490 is a 1.25 Gbps bidirectional (BiDi) optical transceiver in the classic GBIC package, designed to carry Gigabit-rate traffic over a single strand of single-mode fiber. It transmits at 1550 nm and receives at 1490 nm through integrated WDM filtering, so upstream and downstream share one fiber and cut fiber usage in half. Rated for distances of up to 80 km, the module serves long point-to-point runs where spare fiber strands are scarce or expensive to light.

Built as a drop-in replacement for legacy GBIC line cards, it keeps aging telecom equipment in service. BiDi modules deploy as matched pairs, with the opposite end transmitting 1490 nm and receiving 1550 nm.
