Overview

The FT-120KM-1550 is a long-haul 1.25 Gbps GBIC optical transceiver that works at 1550 nm over single-mode fiber and is rated for spans reaching 120 km. It links distant nodes — inter-office trunks, rural access tails and metro transport rings — on a single fiber pair, sparing operators the cost of intermediate regeneration or repeater sites.

The 1550 nm window offers the lowest fiber attenuation, which is why single-channel long-distance links traditionally operate there. Housed in the hot-swappable GBIC package, the module drops into existing switch, router and transport slots, letting carriers extend Gigabit Ethernet or SDH/SONET tributary service far beyond the metro edge without replacing installed line cards.
